Buzzword Bingo!

Our curated list of office jargon and other words that are thrown around the office and in job listings. The list keeps growing so come back often!

A carrot

Losing track of all the new terms and buzzwords?

We’ve been trolling the internet forums, the space near the office water cooler and job-listing sites to bring you a list of buzzwords and their actual meanings.

These words are thrown around in daily meetings and managers absolutely love using them with wreckless abandon to sound relevant. Recruiters also use them to catch unsuspecting candidates in job listings.

Hopefully, this handy list will deter some of their usage going forward and help job-seekers avoid nasty surprises. We can only hope.

Hybrid Working

This one is prolific on recruitment websites. Tread carefully. Very few employers genuinely offer the flexibility that hybrid working offers. If you’re at an employer that honours this, realize how fortunate you are.

Top-Tip: Ask about what they mean by “hybrid” working during the interview. If the response is something about “1 day a week at home” – you can safely assume that it will never happen.

Socialize Info

What they say: “Could you please socialize this info across to everyone?”

What they mean: I’m too hip and trendy to say “send an email to everyone”.

Presentation Pack

Presentation Packs are lengthy PowerPoint presentations. If someone asks you for a Presentation Pack, it’s their way of saying that 1 slide containing relevant information isn’t enough. They want pictures, they want waffling and, by damnit, they want elation!

Quick Question

These are never quick. The are the opposite of quick.

Competitive Salary

If the salary figure itself were to be used in the job listing, no one would apply.

Synergy

This word is used by executives and management when communication between teams doesn’t exist. Because telling people to start talking to each other is too complicated.

Three Amigos

3Amigos is a useful tool in a team’s arsenal to have ad-hoc sessions with Business Analysts, Testers and Developers on stories that are a lot trickier than anticipated. They are not recurring or mandatory events.
